On December 19th, Philadelphia Federal District Court Judge William Yohn overturned Mumia Abu-Jamal’s death sentence. At the same time Yohn upheld Mumia’s conviction on 1st degree murder. The judge refused to consider new evidence exonerating Mumia – including a confession by another man – saying it was “untimely”! It seems there is no statute of limitations on Murder but apparently there is one on Innocence!

Tens of thousands of people have demonstrated and rallied for Mumia around the world. There can be no doubt that the decision to lift the Death Sentence is a concession to this decade-long international struggle. Apparently, the movement to defend Mumia has made the government fear a firestorm of protest should it proceed to an execution. At the same time, as the Philadelphia papers have made clear, powerful political forces hope, with the death sentence lifted, Mumia’s case won’t get much public attention and support even though he continues to fight to overturn his conviction and win his freedom. And, as it stands today, under Judge Yohn’s order, the State of Pennsylvania could even attempt to have Mumia re-sentenced to death at some future date.

Sam Jordan will give us a full analysis of both the complex legal and political situation this struggle now faces. There will be ample time for questions and discussion. The program will include proposals for action during the Spring.
