that he orders the Attorney General of Pennsylvania to takeover the representation
of the Commonwealth in Mumia's case and appear before Court of Common
Pleas Judge Dembe and U.S. District Judge Yohn and stipulate that Mumia's
conviction and death sentence be overturned and that he be freed immediately.

International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 10

Dear
Governor Schweiker
The
International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has been defending
innocent death row prisoner and journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal for eleven
years. Recognizing that he never received a fair trial,
we stopped work at all ports on the West Coast of the United States on
April 29, 1999 to demand that he be freed. Now, evidence has come to light
confirming Mumia's innocence and shockingly exposing the racial bias of
Judge Sabo.

the real killer, has come forward and in a sworn affidavit admitted that
he and an accomplice killed police officer Faulkner. Furthermore, in another
recently sworn affidavit by court reporter, Terri Maurer-Carter affirmed
that she heard Judge Sabo, referring to Mr. Jamal in his private chamber,
say, "Yeah, and I'm gonna help 'em fry the n--r." A racist judge
who connived with the prosecution to procure Mr. Jamal's conviction and
death sentence because of Mr. Jamal's race and could not possibly have
given him a "fair" trial or post-conviction hearing.
The Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania, especially in Philadelphia, has a proud history of abolitionists
fighting against racism and slavery. The decisive battle of the Civil
War in which the Union army defeted the troops of the Confederacy was
fought in the historic Battle of Gettsburg. Judge Sabo has made a mockery
of justice and dragged the flag of Pennsylvania in the mud.
Governor,
ILWU Local 10 respectfully requests that you order the Attorney General
of Pennsylvania to takeover the representation of the Commonwealth in
Mr. Jamal's case and appear before Court of Common Pleas Judge Dembe (who
is presently considering Mr. Jamal's state post-conviction petition) and/or
U.S.
District Judge Yohn (who is presently considering Mr. Jamal's federal
habeas petition) and
stipulate that Mr. Jamal's conviction and death sentence be overturned
and that he be freed immediately.
